ICAO-Codes
Aerodromes and airlines are clearly identified by means of location indicators. Location indicators are mainly used by air traffic controls and in order to do flight routings. They consist of a combination of four letters and should not be mixed up with the 3-letter-code of the IATA which faces the publicity more often as it is printed on tickets or baggage labels.
The location indicator has following composition:
The first letter identifies the region resp. continent (in some cases the country) in which the aerodrome is located.
The second letter describes the country. Germany is one of few countries that has two indicators, ED (for civil airports) and ET (for military airports). This results from the former identification ET for the German Democratic Republic.
The last two (resp. three) letters assign the airports within the country. This assignment differs from country to country
